"it’s a little bit like that, 1 oz if sprayed correctly will change the soil of a whole acre. This little bit can do it. It can’t be understood in the way that the few minerals that are in here would cause that immense change. We must understand this as a force akin to (a negative description) a speck of matter in atomic fusion that can cause an enormous explosion. This is the key point to changing dead soils that have been polluted, where nothing will grow any more, into abundantly active soils, full of worms, with a beautiful structure, producing healthy food". This was Alex Podolinsky speaking about the bio-dynamic preparation "500" on the ABC television program, "A Big Country" in 1987.
Since that time Alex has lectured around Australia and overseas on the method of bio-dynamic farming. Volume 1 is the first six of the bio-dynamic introductory lectures that have found wide use amongst Australian farmers. The volume begins with Alex describing his own experience of perfecting the bio-dynamic method of agriculture to suit the wide, low-labour/acerage conditions of Australia. The following lectures cover the role of plant roots, the humus law, converting a farm, understanding pests, large acreages, sowing by the moon, the bio-dynamic approach to ploughing, the influence of the planets, permanent pasture, and natural recessions in pasture. The quality of the spoken word has been retained throughout.
Whilst these lectures are down-to-earth and practical and discuss bio-dynamic fundamentals, they do not give a detailed description of the application of bio-dynamics. Experience has shown that for an introduction to effective practice of the bio-dynamic method direct instruction and initial supervision is necessary.
In Australia a wide-ranging advisory service has developed for this purpose. It functions along self-help lines.
